Indications
Vibramycin, also known by its generic name doxycycline, is a tetracycline antibiotic that is prescribed to treat a broad spectrum of bacterial infections.
Vibramycin mechanism of action involves the inhibition of bacterial growth and reproduction in the body.
When prescribing Vibramycin, healthcare professionals advise their patients to adhere strictly to the medication’s prescribed regimen. Doing so helps to ensure the effectiveness of the medication in treating specific bacterial infections.
Use and Dosage
Read the Patient Information Leaflet if available from your pharmacist before you start taking doxycycline and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
This medication is best taken by mouth on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal, usually 1 or 2 times daily or as directed by your doctor. Take this medication with a full glass of water (8 ounces/240 milliliters) unless directed otherwise.
Take this medication 2 to 3 hours before or after taking any products containing aluminum, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, or bismuth subsalicylate. Some examples include antacids, didanosine solution, quinapril, vitamins/minerals, dairy products (such as milk, and yogurt), and calcium-enriched juice. These products bind with doxycycline, preventing your body from fully absorbing the drug.
When used to prevent malaria, this medication is usually taken once daily. Take the first dose of this medication 1 to 2 days before travel or as directed by your doctor. Continue to take this medication daily while in the malarious area. Upon returning home, you should keep taking this medication for 4 more weeks. If you are unable to finish this course of doxycycline, contact your doctor.
If you are using the liquid form of this medication, shake the bottle well before each dose. Carefully measure the dose using a special measuring device/spoon. Do not use a household spoon because you may not get the correct dose.
The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. For children, the dosage may also be based on weight.
For the best effect, take this antibiotic at evenly spaced times. To help you remember, take this medication at the same time(s) every day.
Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a return of the infection.
Side Effects
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning in your eyes, skin pain, a red or purple skin rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling).
Seek medical treatment if you have a serious drug reaction that can affect many parts of your body. Symptoms may include skin rash, fever, swollen glands, flu-like symptoms, muscle aches, severe weakness, unusual bruising, or yellowing of your skin or eyes. This reaction may occur several weeks after you begin using Vibramycin.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
- Severe stomach pain, diarrhea that is watery or bloody
- Throat irritation, trouble swallowing
- Chest pain, irregular heart rhythm, feeling short of breath
- Little or no urination

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur.
Cautions
You should not take this medicine if you are allergic to Vibramycin or other tetracycline antibiotics such as demeclocycline, minocycline, tetracycline, or tigecycline.
Tell your doctor if you have ever had:
- Liver disease
- Kidney disease
- Asthma or sulphite allergy
- Increased pressure inside your skull
- If you also take isotretinoin, seizure medicine, or a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin)
If you are using Vibramycin to treat gonorrhea, your doctor may test you to make sure you do not also have syphilis, another sexually transmitted disease.
Taking this medicine during pregnancy may affect tooth and bone development in the unborn baby. Taking Vibramycin during the last half of pregnancy can cause permanent tooth discoloration later in the baby’s life. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant.
Vibramycin can make birth control pills less effective. Ask your doctor about using non-hormonal birth control (condom, diaphragm with spermicide) to prevent pregnancy.
Doxycycline can pass into breast milk and may affect bone and tooth development in a nursing infant. Do not breastfeed while you are taking doxycycline.
