Indications

Spiriva Respimat is an inhaler used to prevent bronchospasm in adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as well as asthma attacks in adults and children over 6 years of age.

Tiotropium is a bronchodilator that relaxes the muscles in your airways to reduce obstructions and improve airflow in those with asthma or COPD by spraying soft mist into your respiratory system. Thanks to its anticholinergic and antimuscarinic properties, Spiriva Respimat helps improve quality of life by decreasing the frequency of bronchospasm and asthma attacks.

This inhaler medication is an effective therapy for COPD and asthma that offers a low incidence of adverse effects. Dry mouth is the only common side effect which is tolerable and often avoidable.

Cautions

Spiriva Respimat is designed to reduce the frequency of bronchospasm attacks and improve airflow; it will not work fast enough to treat an attack that has already started. Use fast-acting rescue medication to treat bronchospasm or asthma attacks.

Avoid driving or performing any hazardous activities until you know how this medication will affect you because tiotropium may impair your reactions.

To ensure your safety when taking tiotropium, tell your doctor if you have any of the following:

  • Narrow angle glaucoma
  • Kidney disease
  • A milk allergy
  • An enlarged prostate or urination problems

Consult with your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using Spiriva Respimat to determine the risks and benefits. Tiotropium’s effects on unborn babies are unclear but having uncontrolled asthma during pregnancy can cause many complications.

Ask your doctor before breastfeeding while taking Spiriva Respimat.

Some drugs may interact with tiotropium and cause adverse events. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including over the counter medicine, but especially any of the following:

  • Medicine for depression, anxiety, mood disorders, or mental illness
  • Cold or allergy medicine
  • Medication to treat Parkinson’s disease
  • Medicine to treat stomach problems, motion sickness, or irritable bowel syndrome
  • Medicine for overactive bladder
  • Other bronchodilator asthma medications

Spiriva Respimat is not an approved treatment for anyone younger than 6 years of age.

FAQ

How can Spiriva Respimat help?

Spiriva Respimat improves airflow and reduces bronchospasm attacks by delivering a soft mist into your respiratory system. The mist allows tiotropium to be absorbed and relaxes the muscles in your airways to ease your breathing. Thanks to this, the medication helps prevent airway obstructions.

What is the difference between rescue and maintenance treatment?

Rescue inhalers treat bronchospasm attacks that have already begun whereas maintenance treatments help manage and relieve symptoms of COPD. Spiriva Respimat is a maintenance medication designed to help decrease the frequency and severity of attacks but is not suitable to treat any that have already begun.
