Indications
Remeron is an antidepressant used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) as well as anxiety and sleep disturbances.
Mirtazapine is a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant that supports and enhances norepinephrine and serotonergic neurotransmission. Remeron is not focused on blocking presynaptic absorption of norepinephrine and serotonin, like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), but blocks specific receptors to increase noradrenergic and serotonergic activity.
Thanks to Remeron’s enhancement of norepinephrine and serotonin, the medication is effective at relieving symptoms of depression. By blocking certain receptors, mirtazapine also offers anxiolytic and sedative properties to improve symptoms of anxiety and insomnia that may occur alongside depression.
