Indications

NP Thyroid is a thyroid medication used to treat hypothyroidism (low thyroid syndrome) as well as to treat or prevent goiter (enlarged thyroid gland).

Natural thyroid improves hypothyroidism by increasing missing thyroid hormones which help improve your serum lipid levels and reduce body fat.

Hormone replacement therapy using NP Thyroid is a long-standing form of treatment for hypothyroidism. This natural thyroid medication offers hormones that your body is unable to produce at the quantities needed to help combat low thyroid syndrome and its symptoms.

Uses and Dosage

The dose of NP Thyroid that is prescribed will vary depending on the individual being treated and the severity of their hypothyroidism. Always follow your doctor’s directives and read packaging labels carefully.

  • Swallow tablets whole
  • NP Thyroid doses must always be personalized
  • Adults usually take a low initial dose that is titrated in increments of 15mg
  • Most adults start by taking 30mg once daily and increase to 60 to 120mg daily
  • Patients shouldn’t take more than 180mg daily
  • Continue using NP Thyroid even if you feel well
  • Tell your surgeon you use natural thyroids before having any surgery
  • You may need frequent blood tests during treatment
  • Call your doctor if you notice signs of thyroid toxicity
  • Store tablets at room temperature away from moisture and heat

Side Effects

While thyroid hormones are naturally produced by your body, some side effects may occur while your hormones are increased and balanced. Speak with your doctor to learn more information about any side effects that may occur when taking natural thyroid.

Common NP Thyroid side effects:

  • Temporary hair loss (especially in children)

Serious Side Effects

If NP Thyroid is taken at too high a dose, thyroid toxicity may occur. Call your doctor immediately if you notice signs of thyroid toxicity:

  • Chest pain
  • Fast or pounding heartbeats
  • Feeling hot or nervous
  • Unusual sweating

Allergic Reactions

Thyroid hormones occur naturally in your body, so you shouldn’t be allergic to the medication itself, but some ingredients used to form the tablets may cause an allergic reaction. If you develop signs of an allergic reaction, stop using this medication and contact your doctor.

NP Thyroid allergy symptoms may include:

  • Hives
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat

Cautions

If you have thyrotoxicosis, a thyroid disorder, or an uncontrolled adrenal gland problem, NP Thyroid may not be a suitable form of treatment.

If NP Thyroid is taken at too high a dose for what your body needs, you can develop thyroid toxicity. Contact your doctor right away if you have chest pain, fast or pounding heartbeats, if you feel hot or nervous, or if you are sweating more than usual.

To ensure natural thyroid is safe for you to take, tell your doctor if you have any of the following:

  • Heart disease, angina
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Type 1 or 2 diabetes
  • Adrenal gland problems

Wait 4 hours before or after taking NP Thyroid if you also take cholestyramine or colestipol.

Avoid taking antacid medicine for 4 hours before or after taking thyroid hormones. Antacids can make it harder for your body to fully absorb the natural thyroid.

Some other drugs can interact with NP Thyroid and cause adverse reactions. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including over the counter medicine, vitamins, and herbal products, but especially any of the following:

  • Birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy
  • Blood thinner
  • Insulin or oral diabetes medication
  • Medications containing iodine
  • Salicylates such as aspirin
  • Steroids such as prednisone

Natural thyroid should not cause harm to an unborn baby, but the dose you need while pregnant may be different. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant while taking NP Thyroid so you can be monitored more closely.

Small amounts of thyroid hormones can pass into breast milk, but it is not expected to cause harm to a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding while taking this medication to ensure the safety of your child.

FAQ

What is the difference between NP Thyroid and Armour Thyroid?

Both products offer oral thyroid hormones and combine the hormones liothyronine and levothyroxine. The difference between the two are their inactive ingredients as well as their reception by some patients. NP Thyroid is also manufactured by a different company from Armour Thyroid.

When should I take my thyroid medication?

Your dose of NP Thyroid should be prescribed by your doctor and personalized to you, including the time of day in which you should take the medication. However, absorption of the thyroid hormones may be increased when taking on an empty stomach. You should also take your dose 4 hours before or after taking an antacid or either cholestyramine or colestipol.
