Indications

Estrace is a brand name for a medication containing the hormone estradiol, which is a type of estrogen.

Estradiol is used to treat menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness and itching, and burning sensations and is used to prevent osteoporosis in menopausal women and help with certain types of cancers like breast and prostate cancer.

Estradiol works by replacing the estrogen that the body no longer produces after menopause.

Use and Dosage

Read the Patient Information Leaflet if available from your pharmacist before you start using this medication and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor. You may take it with food or right after a meal to prevent stomach upset.

If you are taking the extended-release tablets, do not crush, chew, or dissolve them. Doing so can release the entire drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects. Swallow the tablets whole.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

Take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) each day as directed. Follow your dosing schedule carefully.

Do not increase your dose or take this medication more often or for a longer time than directed. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.

Cautions

Before you start to use Estrace, you must disclose your full medical history to your physician, including any history of blood clots, certain cancers, stroke, heart disease, blood clotting disorders, unusual vaginal bleeding of unknown cause, angioedema, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease, diabetes, mineral imbalance, high cholesterol or triglyceride levels, uterus problems, obesity, lupus, hyperthyroidism, gallbladder disease, asthma, seizure, migraine, porphyria, any mental or mood disorders.

Some conditions may impact how your body will respond to the treatment. Moreover, you should talk about all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, supplements, and herbal products you are taking, because of possible drug interactions.

Always watch out for an allergic reaction while taking this drug. Do not take this oral estrogen derivative if you have a known allergy to estradiol or any inactive ingredients it may contain. You must discontinue the medication and seek emergency medical help once you observe signs of hypersensitivity, such as skin rashes, itchiness, swelling of the face and neck, severe dizziness, and difficulty breathing.

Avoid smoking or using tobacco while taking estradiol. Tobacco has a component that could further increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, blood clots, and high blood pressure (hypertension), especially among women 35 years of age and above.

Talk to your healthcare provider if you will be confined in a certain position for a long time. This includes going on long-haul flights or going through surgery. This is because limited movements could also increase the risk of developing blood clots & stroke.

This drug has the potential to develop dark and blotchy areas on the face and skin. It could be worsened by sun exposure. As much as possible, you must limit your exposure to the sun and avoid indoor tanning. Always use sunblock cream and wear protective clothing when going outdoors.
