Indications
Advair Diskus is an asthma medication used to treat and prevent asthma attacks. The medication also helps maintain airflow in those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as well as chronic bronchitis or emphysema.
This medication combines fluticasone propionate and salmeterol to reduce inflammation in the respiratory tract and improve lung function. Fluticasone is a corticosteroid that provides anti-inflammatory properties while salmeterol is a long-acting beta adrenoreceptor agonist (LABA) that stimulates enzymes that help improve symptoms of asthma, COPD, and other respiratory conditions.
Advair Diskus helps improve and prevent asthma attacks as well as COPD, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. The medication is generally well-tolerated with mild to moderate reported adverse effects.

Cautions
Advair Diskus is not intended to be used as a rescue medicine and won’t work quickly enough to treat an asthma or bronchospasm attack.
Avoid being around people with colds or infections while taking Advair Diskus because your immune system may be weaker. Chickenpox, measles, and similar conditions could be serious or fatal in people using steroids, including fluticasone. Contact your doctor for preventative treatment if you encounter an infected individual.
Do not use a second inhaled bronchodilator with Advair Diskus unless directed by your doctor to do so. These medications include formoterol, arformoterol, indacaterol, and others.
Seek immediate medical attention if your breathing problems worsen or if you don’t think your medications are working as well as normal.
Do not use Advair Diskus if you are having an active asthma attack or severe COPD symptoms.
Fluticasone can cause your immune system to weaken which can increase your risk for developing new or worsening infections. Tell your doctor about any illness or infection you have had in the past several weeks to ensure they don’t worsen or happen again.
To ensure the safety of taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have ever had any of the following:
- Glaucoma or cataracts
- Heart disease or high blood pressure
- Seizure
- Diabetes
- Food or drug allergy
- Weak immune system
- Any type of infection
- Osteoporosis
- Thyroid disorder
- Liver or kidney disease
Using steroids for long term may cause bone loss, especially if you smoke, do not exercise, if you do not get enough vitamin D or calcium, or if your family has a history of osteoporosis. Consult with your doctor to assess your risk and create a custom treatment plan.
Some medications may interact with fluticasone or salmeterol and affect your blood levels which can increase side effects or make medications less effective. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including over the counter medicine, vitamins, and herbal products, but especially the following:
- Antifungal medication
- HIV or AIDS medicine
It is unknown whether Advair Diskus will harm an unborn baby, but having uncontrolled asthma during pregnancy could cause several complications in mother and baby. Consult with your doctor to determine the best course of action for treating your respiratory condition.
Ask your doctor before breastfeeding while taking this medication.
Do not give Advair Diskus to any child without first talking to a doctor.

FAQ
How long does it take for Advair Diskus to work?
Asthma symptoms may improve within 30 minutes of taking your Advair Diskus dose, but the medication may take up to a week of treatment or longer before it provides its full benefits. While this asthma medication starts acting within 30 minutes, it does not act fast enough to stop an asthma or bronchospasm attack.
When should I take Advair Diskus?
You should take your Advair Diskus dose twice a day, 12 hours apart. The time of day you take this medication won’t impact its effects, so you can take it at times that work best for you but keep them consistent. This asthma medication also shouldn’t be used to treat attacks between doses, if you have an asthma attack you should use a fast-acting inhalation medicine.
