Indications

Premarin is an estrogen medication used to treat symptoms of menopause including hot flashes and vaginal discharge. The medication can also be used to prevent osteoporosis from developing in menopausal women.

This menopause medication combines a mixture of estrogen hormones, conjugated estrogens, which help replace and balance estrogen levels that are missing or decreased during menopause. Thanks to this action, Premarin can help maintain bone health and strength which is at risk when estrogen levels drop during menopause.

Conjugated estrogen has been shown to increase the quality of life for women in menopause by treating and decreasing related symptoms. Most oral hormone therapies add a progesterone with the estrogens, especially for non-hysterectomized women, to reduce the risk of developing endometrial cancer.

Cautions

Premarin treatment may increase your risk of developing a condition that could lead to uterine cancer, especially if taken by a woman with a uterus without the inclusion of progesterone. Tell your doctor immediately if you have any unusual vaginal bleeding.

Conjugated estrogen may increase your risk for developing blood clots, cancer of the breast, uterus, or ovaries, or of having a stroke or heart attack. Those with high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, or who are overweight, or smoke may be at a higher risk of developing these issues.

Self-examine your breasts for any lumps monthly and have regular mammograms while taking Premarin.

Avoid smoking while taking Premarin because it can greatly increase your risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack, all of which can be deadly.

Avoid ingesting grapefruit and grapefruit juice while taking Premarin because they can interact with conjugated estrogens and cause adverse reactions.

Do not use Premarin if you have any of the following:

  • Unusual vaginal bleeding unchecked by a doctor
  • Liver disease
  • History of heart attack, stroke, or blood clot
  • Increased risk for blood clots due to a heart issue or a hereditary blood disorder
  • History of hormone-related cancer or cancer of the breast, uterus/cervix, or vagina

Do not take conjugated estrogen if you are pregnant. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant to determine a safe and effective treatment for you and your child.

To ensure your safety in taking Premarin, tell your doctor if you have ever had any of the following:

  • A hysterectomy
  • Heart disease
  • Liver problems or jaundice caused by pregnancy or taking hormones
  • Kidney disease
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Asthma
  • Epilepsy or another seizure disorder
  • Migraines
  • Lupus
  • Endometriosis or uterine fibroid tumors
  • Hereditary angioedema
  • Porphyria
  • Thyroid disorder
  • High levels of calcium in your blood

Some drugs may interact with conjugated estrogens and cause unwanted side effects. To ensure your safety, tell your doctor about all the medications you take including over the counter medicine, vitamins, and herbal products.

Breastfeeding while taking Premarin may not be safe because estrogen can slow your production of breastmilk. Consult with your doctor if you are breastfeeding.
