Indications

Seroquel is an antipsychotic medication used to treat and manage symptoms of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder (MDD).

Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic derived from dibenzothiazepine that antagonizes receptors in your brain to help balance chemicals. Seroquel’s antagonistic actions also provide anxiolytic and antidepressant properties which help manage symptoms of bipolar disorder and depression as well as schizophrenia.

This antipsychotic medication is generally well-tolerated and effectively counteracts both positive and negative schizophrenia symptoms. Seroquel has been found beneficial for those whose conditions have been unresponsive to other antipsychotic treatments.

FAQ

When will Seroquel start working?

Seroquel needs to work into your system and inhibit receptors in your brain; this will take some time before you experience its full effects. When you first start taking this antipsychotic medication, you also need to work up to an effective dose which can take some time. After several days or a few weeks, your symptoms should improve.

Can quetiapine cause diabetes or make diabetes worse?

A side effect of Seroquel is an increase in blood sugar levels, but this affects less than 1 in 100 people and is unlikely. Your doctor should run blood tests to check how much sugar you have and will monitor if there are any changes after you start taking Seroquel.

Is there any food or drink I need to avoid while taking Seroquel?

Do not eat grapefruit or drink its juice when taking Seroquel because it can cause side effects to increase. You should also avoid drinking alcohol because it can interact with quetiapine and cause adverse side effects. Other than this, you can eat and drink as normal.
