Indications
Lopid is a medication used to help lower fats (triglycerides) and raise “good” cholesterol (HDL) in the blood.
Lopid is indicated as an adjunct to diet and other non-pharmacological treatment (e.g., exercise, weight reduction) and belongs to a group of drugs known as “fibrates.”
Lopid is a lipid regulating agent that decreases serum triglycerides and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol and increases high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. High levels of triglycerides and cholesterol are associated with an increased risk of heart disease.
Lopid is known by its generic name gemfibrozil.
Use and Dosage
Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually twice a day (30 minutes before your morning and evening meals).
Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. If you also take certain other drugs to lower your cholesterol (bile acid-binding resins such as cholestyramine or colestipol), take gemfibrozil at least 1 hour before or at least 4-6 hours after taking these medications. These products can react with gemfibrozil, preventing its full absorption.
Take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. Remember to take it at the same time each day. Keep taking this medication even if you feel well. Most people with high cholesterol/triglycerides do not feel sick.
Side Effects
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
In rare cases, Lopid can cause a condition that results in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure. Call your doctor right away if you have unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness especially if you also have fever, unusual tiredness, and dark colored urine.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
- Sharp pain in your upper stomach (especially after eating)
- Jaundice (yellowing of your skin or eyes)
- Pain or burning when you urinate
- Blurred vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights
- Low blood cell counts–pale skin, easy bruising, unusual bleeding, unusual tiredness, feeling light-headed or short of breath, or cold hands and feet
Common side effects of Lopid may include:
- Stomach pain, indigestion, or diarrhea
- Numbness or tingly feeling
- Dizziness, drowsiness
- Blurred vision
- Muscle or joint pain
- Loss of interest in sex or impotence
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur.
