Indications

Reglan is a heartburn and digestive medication used to treat heartburn caused by gastroesophageal reflux as well as slow stomach emptying (gastroparesis) in those with diabetes.

Metoclopramide is a dopamine receptor antagonist that supports intestinal emptying by stimulating the upper digestive tract. By stimulating the gastrointestinal smooth muscle, Reglan can relieve heartburn and discomfort caused by gastroesophageal reflux and gastroparesis.

This heartburn medication has been found to be effective at stimulating the upper gastrointestinal tract without affecting stomach acid secretion. Reglan side effects are also usually mild, transient, and reversible after stopping treatment.

Uses and Dosage

The dose of Reglan that is prescribed will vary depending on the individual and gastrointestinal condition being treated. Follow all your doctor’s instructions and read packaging labels carefully to ensure the best results during treatment.

  • Swallow tablets whole
  • Take 30 minutes before meals and before bed or only with meals that cause heartburn
  • Most adults taking continuous dosing take 10 to 15mg four times a day for 4 to 12 weeks
  • For relief of symptoms, adults can take up to 20mg before meals that cause heartburn
  • To treat diabetic gastroparesis, adults take 10mg four times daily for 2 to 8 weeks
  • Avoid taking Reglan for longer than 12 weeks

Cautions

Do not take Reglan in higher doses than prescribed or for longer than 12 weeks to avoid developing a serious movement disorder. Long-term use of metoclopramide increases your risk of this condition which may not be reversible. Patients with diabetes or who are older may be more at risk.

Do not drink alcohol while taking Reglan because it can increase adverse reactions from metoclopramide.

Avoid driving or performing hazardous tasks until you know how Reglan will affect you because it could impair your reactions.

Reglan should not be taken with any other medication that increases your risk of developing extrapyramidal reactions such as muscle spasms, contractions, or jerky/rigid movements.

Stop taking Reglan and contact your doctor if you develop tremors or uncontrolled muscle movements as well as any of the following symptoms: stiff muscles, confusion, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats, rapid breathing, depressed mood, suicidal thoughts or actions, hallucinations, anxiety, agitation, seizure, or jaundice.

Do not use Reglan if you have ever had muscle movement problems after using metoclopramide or another similar medication or if you have any of the following:

  • Tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movement disorder)
  • Stomach or intestinal problems (blockage, bleeding, or perforation)
  • Epilepsy or another seizure disorder
  • Adrenal gland tumor

  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Muscle movement problems

What to avoid when taking Reglan?

Avoid drinking alcohol while using Reglan because it can increase unwanted side effects. You should also ensure that you do not exceed the dose prescribed to you and that you do not continue treatment past 12 weeks or your doctor’s recommended length of time.
