Indications
Savella is a pain medication used to treat chronic pain from fibromyalgia.
Milnacipran is a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor that prevents presynaptic reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin without affecting other neurotransmitters such as dopamine. By increasing your availability of these two neurotransmitters, Savella reduces pain transmission which helps relieve chronic pain from fibromyalgia.
This medication has been found to be an effective treatment for fibromyalgia and chronic pain related to this condition. Savella is also generally well-tolerated and helps improve quality of life in patients.

Cautions
Do not take Savella if you have used an MAO inhibitor within the past 14 days. These inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, or tranylcypromine. Wait at least 5 days after stopping Savella to take an MAOI.
At the beginning of your treatment with Savella you may have suicidal thoughts, especially if you are younger than 24 years old. See your doctor regularly for the first 12 weeks.
Tell your doctor about any new or worsening symptoms such as changes in mood or behaviour, anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, depressed, or have suicidal thoughts.
Avoid drinking alcohol during your treatment with Savella because it could increase your risk of damaging your liver.
To ensure your safety when taking Savella, tell your doctor if you have ever had any of the following:
- Liver disease
- Kidney disease
- Heart disease, high blood pressure
- Seizures or epilepsy
- Bleeding problems
- Low sodium levels in your blood
- Sexual problems
- If you drink alcohol
- If you take a blood thinner like warfarin
Ask your doctor about using any nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen. You may bruise or bleed easily if you take these drugs with milnacipran.
Make sure that your doctor is aware if you take any stimulant medicine, opioid medication, herbal products, or any medication used to treat depression, mental illness, Parkinson’s disease, migraines, infections, or to prevent nausea and vomiting. These types of medications increase your serotonin levels and when used with milnacipran could lead to serotonin syndrome, a serious condition.
Tell your doctor if you use any medications that make you sleepy, such as cold or allergy medications, sedatives, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxants, and medication for seizures, depression, or anxiety. These medications can increase the drowsy effects caused by milnacipran.
To ensure your safety when taking Savella, tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including over the counter medicine, vitamins, and herbal products.
Your thinking or reactions may be impaired while taking Savella. Be careful when driving or performing any tasks that require alertness, especially until you know how the medication will affect you.
