Indications

Valcyte is an antiviral medication used to prevent cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections from occurring after an organ transplant. The medication is also used to treat CMV eye infections in adults with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Valganiclovir is a ganciclovir prodrug that inhibits viral DNA polymerase to stop the growth and spread of harmful viral cells. This action allows Valcyte to prevent CMV infections in those at high risk after receiving an organ transplant or those with AIDS.

Dosage and Administration

The dose of Valcyte that is prescribed will vary depending on the individual being treated. Follow all directions given by your healthcare provider and read packaging instructions carefully to ensure the best results. Do not change your dose without talking to your healthcare provider.

  • Swallow tablets whole, do not crush or break
  • Take with food
  • Do not touch the contents of the tablet or get any of it in your eyes
  • Store at room temperature away from children and pets

To treat CMV eye infections:

  • Adults should start by taking 900mg twice daily for 21 days
  • After 21 days, adults can take a maintenance dose of 900mg once a day

To prevent CMV disease:

  • Adults who received heart or kidney-pancreas transplants should take 900mg once daily within 10 days of their transplantation
  • Treatment should continue until 100 days after transplantation
  • Adults receiving kidney transplants should take 900mg once daily within 10 days of transplantation
  • Treatment for kidney transplants should continue for 200 days after transplantation
  • Children’s doses are determined based on body surface area and creatinine clearance
  • Children receiving kidney transplants should start treatment within 10 days of transplantation until 200 days after
  • Children aged 1 month to 16 years receiving heart transplants should take their dose within 10 days of transplantation until 100 days afterwards

Common Valcyte side effects include:

  • Easy bruising, unusual bleeding

Serious Side Effects

  • Kidney problems (little or no urination, painful or difficult urination, swelling of your feet or ankles, tiredness, shortness of breath)

  • Fever, chills, tiredness
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Light-headedness, shortness of breath
  • Mouth or skin sores
  • Pale skin, cold hands and feet
  • Easy bruising, unusual bleeding

Allergic Reactions

Do not take Valcyte if you are allergic to valganiclovir, ganciclovir, or any of the tablet ingredients. Stop using this medication and contact your healthcare provider immediately if you notice any of the following signs of an allergic reaction:

  • Hives
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat

Cautions

Do not use Valcyte if you are pregnant because the medication can cause serious harm and birth defects. Tell your healthcare provider immediately if pregnancy happens when the mother or father are using Valcyte.

Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy. If you are a woman taking this medication, continue using birth control for at least 30 days after your last dose. If you are a man, continue for at least 90 days after your last dose.

Valcyte may affect fertility in both men and women, but it is still important to use effective methods of birth control to prevent pregnancy during treatment due to risks.

Valcyte may cause issues with your eyes; check them at least every 4 to 6 weeks during treatment with Valcyte.

Avoid being near people who are ill or infected because you may develop a sickness or infection more easily.

Avoid any acitivies that increase your risk of injury or bleeding during treatment with Valcyte.

Do not drive or perform hazardous activities if this medication causes you to become dizzy or drowsy.

Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you notice any signs of an infection while taking Valcyte. Symptoms may include fever, chills, tiredness, flu symptoms, mouth or skin sores, pale skin, easy bruising, unusual bleeding, difficulty breathing, or light-headedness.

Valcyte may increase your risk of developing certain kinds of cancer; speak with your healthcare provider to learn more and determine your risks.

Before starting treatment with Valcyte, tell your healthcare provider if you have ever had any of the following:

  • Kidney disease
  • Low blood cell counts
  • Radiation treatment

Do not breastfeed if you have HIV or AIDS because the virus could be passed through your breastmilk.

Some drugs can interact with Valcyte and cause unwanted side effects. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medications that you take, including over the counter medicines.

Valcyte may cause some harm to your kidneys, an effect that can be increased if you also use certain medications used to treat infections, cancer, osteoporosis, organ transplant rejection, bowel disorders, high blood pressure, pain, or arthritis.
