Indications
EMLA cream is a topical local anesthetic cream that contains the active ingredients lidocaine and prilocaine. EMLA cream is commonly used to numb the skin before certain medical procedures, such as injections, blood draws, or minor skin surgery.
EMLA cream works by blocking nerve signals in the skin, which helps to reduce pain and discomfort during the procedure. EMLA cream is typically applied to the skin at least 30 minutes before the procedure and covered with a dressing to help it absorb.
Use and Dosage
Dosage and length of application time are based on your age and medical condition and the procedure you are having. In children, dosage may also be based on weight. Do not use larger amounts than prescribed. Do not use on large areas of skin, apply heat, or leave it in place longer than directed or serious side effects may occur.
If you are applying this product on a child, make sure the medication stays in place and that your child does not put the medication or dressing/bandage in their mouth. You may want to use a second covering to prevent the child from touching the cream.

Cautions
You should not use Emla cream if you are allergic to any type of numbing medicine.
Fatal overdoses have occurred when numbing medicines were used without the advice of a medical doctor (such as during a cosmetic procedure like laser hair removal). However, overdose has also occurred in women treated with a numbing medicine before having a mammography.
Be aware that many cosmetic procedures are performed without a medical doctor present.
To make sure Emla is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
- A blood cell disorder called methemoglobinemia
- Liver disease
- A genetic enzyme deficiency called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency
- A family history of methemoglobinemia, or any genetic enzyme deficiency
FDA pregnancy category B. Emla is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment.
